Our History

Tried Stone Church of Greater Love was officially organized on February 12, 1992. The organization founder and leader is Apostle Randolph Scott Witcher. During this first organizational meeting, 12 other people were in attendance. Those founding members were Elnora W. Mayo, Ollie Henson, Gwendolyn M. Williams, Nichole M. Williams, Sharyn M. Robinson, Nancy Bush, Gina C. Hassell, Kathy J. Brown, Deneen Davis, Abner E. Mayo, and David Jones. On March 4, 1992, our first public meeting of worship and praise was held as an established Church. Our goal was to be a visible form to the faith and fellowship of Christ through the power of love for the purpose of reaching the lost, the rejected, and the unchurched. This first service was held at the Ruritan Community Center, Sterling, Virginia and it remained the home place of worship for the next four years.

In May of 1995, Tried Stone Church was relocated to a free standing Church building with an adjacent parsonage in Catlett, Virginia. After settling in Catlett, the Church went through an unusual time of trial, testing, and much needed changes.  While in Catlett, we were befriended by many people of that location, and were able to hold things together with a small group of people at that location for one year.

We found ourselves on the road again in search of another place to call home.  Seeing our need for a place to worship, the pastor and members of one of the local congregations that we were fellowshipping with invited us to use their facility in the afternoon.   For the next five years, Tried Stone Church held its Sunday worship services at the Episcopal Church of the Word, located in Gainesville, Virginia at 2:00pm in the afternoon.

Nearing the summer of our fifth year in Gainesville, our Senior Pastor and Bishop, began hearing from the Lord that it was time for us to move again.  So the Church began looking, not knowing that this next move would be a move into our own personal place of worship.   After spending several months of prayerful searching, one day after leaving work the Holy Spirit prompted Bishop to drive down Cedar Green Road, in Sterling, Virginia . After driving up and down Cedar Green Road and not seeing anything of interest, Bishop concluded that he had made a mistake.  But the very next day as he was leaving work, the Holy Spirit spoke again and led him down Cedar Green Road . This time Bishop followed the road to the end, where the Sterling Village Shopping Center is located and immediately he saw a for lease sign in one of the windows.  He got the contact information and a meeting was set up for the church trustees and the owner of the center.  It was during this first meeting with the owner, that God intervened and a verbal agreement was made to lease Suite #110.   The following week the lease agreement was signed, and about three weeks later, on 1st Sunday November 4, 2000, Tried Stone held its first service in what has remained to this day our church home.

This place that serves as our place of worship and center for Christian training has proved to be a place of growth and increase by the Lord.   It is here that some of the greatest training and teaching has taken place.   It is in this place that services such as our annual Healing and Deliverance Conference has been instituted.  Our Deliverance team has been organized and is quite active in helping individuals in their desire to be set free from the forces of evil. We are indeed grateful to God for leading us to this place.
